Apana Vata is located in the lower pelvic region, and it’s activities are the elimination of menstrual blood,  urine, stool, and sexual fluids. Impaired Apana Vayu and Pitta circulate in different channels of the body, causing various physical symptoms of Premenstrual syndrome.

4. Avoid thick, oily, sour, fried, and indigestible foods that may lead to constipation and flatulence.

5. Avoid pumpkin, potato, mushrooms, cauliflower, cabbage, peas and eggplant.

6. Have a general body massage with sesame oil.

Home Remedies For Premenstrual Syndrome

1. Prepare a powder of dill seeds; fenugreek seeds, carrot seeds, and radish seeds in equal amounts. Take one teaspoon of this mixture with lukewarm water two times a day.
2. Fry half teaspoon of celery seeds in one teaspoon of purified butter. Add half teaspoon of dried ginger root powder and one teaspoon of crushed jaggery to it. Cook up to jaggery liquefies. Take this with a cup of hot milk once each week preceding the menstrual cycle.

3. Fill a tub with lukewarm water. Sit in the tub with the pubic region submerged. This helps to relax the muscles and relieves pain before the onset of menses.

Cooked banana flower eaten with curd is considered an efficient remedy for menstrual disorders like painful menstruation and excessive bleeding. Banana flower helps increase progesterone hormone which reduces the bleeding.


The unripe papaya helps the contraction of the muscle fibers of the womb and is thus beneficial in securing proper menstrual flow. It is especially helpful in case of cessation of menstruation due to exposure to the cold or due to fright in young unmarried girls.


Ginger is also useful in menstrual disorders. A piece of fresh ginger should be pounded and boiled in a cupful of water for few minutes. The infusion sweetened with sugar should be taken thrice daily after meals as a medicine for dysmenorrhoea, and amenorrhoea due to exposure to cold winds and taking a cold bath.

Sesame Seeds

Half a teaspoon of powder of sesame seeds taken with hot water twice daily acts excellently in reducing spasmodic pain during menstruation in young unmarried anemic girls. Its regular use, two days prior to the expected periods, cures scanty menstruation. A warm hip bath containing a handful of bruised sesame seeds should be simultaneously taken along with this recipe.

Mango bark

Juice of the fresh mango bark is also valuable in heavy bleeding during menstruation.


Amaranth is beneficial in the treatment of leucorrhoea. The rind of the root of amaranth rubbed in 250 ml of water and strained. It should be given to the patient daily in the morning as well as in the evening. It is a very effective remedy for this disease.


Several groups of research in England have reported using groundnuts or groundnut products in the treatment of hemophilia, an inherited blood disease which causes hemorrhage. Beneficial results have also been reported from the use of ground nuts in severe cases of epistaxis or nose bleeding and in cases of excessive bleeding during menstruation in women.

Bengal Gram

A bath prepared by putting the entire Bengal gram plant in hot water is highly beneficial in painful menstruation. It may be taken in the form of a sitting steam bath.


A decoction prepared by boiling two teaspoonfuls of powdered safflower seeds in 120. ml of water is given as a remedy to cure painful menstruation.

Dried flowers mixed with rose are also given as a medicine in this condition.
