Muscle cramps are a sudden and involuntary contraction of one or more muscles. If you have already woken up at night, or if you have been drained by a sudden Charley horse, you know that muscle cramps can cause unbearable pain. Although muscle spasms are generally harmless, it can temporarily make it impossible to use the affected muscle.
Long training or physical exertion, especially in hot climates, can cause muscle spasms. Some medications and disorders can also cause muscle spasms. Usually you can treat muscle cramps at home with self-help measures.
Most muscle spasms develop in the leg muscles, especially in the calf muscles. In addition to the sudden and severe pain, you can also feel or see a hard mass of muscle tissue under the skin.
